Hartal,it has been a most talked about issue for the few recent days as Bangladesh Nationalist Party(BNP) called a 36 hours countrywide dawn to dusk general strike due to government's move to change the constitution unilaterally and to rescind the caretaker government provision and conflicts upon many other national issues.Hartal has been a part and parcel of our democratic system for a long,long time.When the opposition party calls for a general strike then ruling party starts to slate marking hartal a undemocratic approach to the democratic system although they did/do the same when they were/are in opposition chair.The ruling party launched a mobile court crackdown arresting the opposition activists in the name of protecting the public property and law and order situation during the BNP and its allie's latest nationwide general strike.Actually we would like to know who is the sage regarding hartal? Let start from 1991.In 1991-1996,in the BNP regime,Awami League(AL) had called 173 days of nationwide general strike sitting on the opposition chair.They had also observed 39 days of non-cooperation demonstration at a stretch in 1996. Afterwards,in 1996-2001,in the AL tenure,BNP had called 59 days of general strike.Later,in 2001-2007, in the BNP regime,AL had imposed 130 days of dawn to dusk nationwide general strike although AL leader Sheikh Hasina proclaimed that they will never enforce any general strike whenever they will be in the opposition chair in her pre-election addresses.They(AL) slew alive human being on the thoroughfare beating with pole and scull on 28th October,2006 in the name of demonstration against the questionable caretaker government.In 2001,AL started to enforce hartal only one and half month after BNP taking the office.They also called 18 days of nationwide daylong general strike within the first 22 months of the BNP regime in 2001-2006.Both leading parties are defrauding the country's people as they are violating their pledges what they do just before the election.It’s time for the people to wake up and be conscious of their right.
